Mata Najwa: DPR Uncensored

Welcome back, people. After a fortnight missing posting an article about Mata Najwa, I'm now back to give some updates about the show. I am not about to tell you about the second episode of Mata Najwa (one that hashed the details of the most earth-shaking scandal in the century: Century Gate). I guess you and I have it enough. We see news on Century Gate scattered almost anywhere on TV while surfing the channels. Posting one more piece of news about that would only nauseate me and you. Furthermore, the scandal is more an issue to solve than a topic of discussion. The more we are trying to know, the more we're likely to see a blind guess, libel, false accusation, groundless prejudice, etc. Just look at how screwed up things have become after too many people speak. I don't mind freedom of speech but when that freedom has been overly practiced and taken for granted, I'd say the situation is as disastrous as the deprivation of such freedom during ORBA (Orde Baru- a period when Soeharto reigned) to the nation. Too much of something is as bad as too little of something. We love freedom yet at the same time need boundaries. I'm not against freedom of speech but we just need a balanced situation.
The third episode of Mata Najwa presented us a new topic other than Century Gate, which is a relief to me. The discussion would certainly strip off any of those who work as a House of Representatives (DPR) members at Senayan, the sacred site for Indonesian legislatures.

Monty Tiwa was featured, presenting his newly released movie (sadly I forgot the title but surely it has the word 'wakil rakyat' in it). Tora Sudiro and Vincent 'Club Eighties' apparently starred the comedy movie. Monty proposed four types of HoR (House of Representatives) members:

  1. Idealistic
  2. Opportunistic
  3. Sweet
  4. Sadistic
Monty added that the idealistic type remains a perfect yet unrealistic image to date. It is getting harder and harder for Indonesian people to have an idealistic HoR member these days. Whilst the other three 'species' are almost anywhere to find on every corner of Senayan.

After that, Ismail Sukribo, a creative guy authoring 'DPR Uncensored', appeared and sat beside Monty. He seemed to be as harsh and critical as Monty when it comes to HoR members' attitude. Different from Monty who expressed his 'hatred' through movie directing and making, Ismail channeled his dissatisfaction through his jovial, witty, comical and amusingly criticizing caricatures which he published on a national newspaper on a regular basis.

One more guest to warm the discussion was Ali Mohtar Ngabalin. This seemingly emotional man (I once saw him on TV, punching fists in the air in some meeting when he lost his patience to persuade another opposing HoR member) was there to represent the House of Representatives. Ali, who looked far more emotionally controlled, was agreeing on Monty Tiwa's proposition that the idealistic type is exceedingly scarce. Ali admitted the poor quality of Indonesian HoR members and proposed some possible solutions to tackle that quality issue:

  1. Political parties should change their HoR members recruiting methods.
  2. The Government has to supply a separated budget allocation for candidates running for HoR seats (to avoid profit-minded attitude after being elected)
  3. The Government has to determine which is the best for us: HoR members best represent Indonesian people or their own political parties. The second seems to prevail nowadays.
  4. The current political system must be changed completely to enable the future idealist candidates to flourish.
Another part of the show that entertained me so much was an interview session where a bunch of celebrated newly appointed HoR members were asked about their understanding on HoR members' rights. Edi Prabowo and Eko "Patrio" had to swallow their pride of being a HoR member since they lost words to answer the simple yet deadly question. Edi Prabowo in a sportsmanship manner admitted his lack of HoR basic knowledge; whereas, Eko "Patrio" tried to cover his inability to answer by leading the interview by rambling about diverse subjects, something that he is really excelled at as a renowned host in the country's entertainment industry. The other interviewed members (Primus Yustisio, Rachel Maryam, Mumtaz Rais) managed to pass the test and maintain their dignity.
