Hi guys, previously on my post about Mata Najwa, I gave some comments on the show's format and 'packaging'. It was quite fun to have a new show here amidst the raging stream of Indonesian electronic cinemas (sinetron) which provide an endless supply of drama and romance that I am getting fed up with.

Speaking of sinetrons, don't we realize recently drama and romance have been the major themes decorating our TV screens? And even you're watching a news program, if you're really aware, there are some parts of news that merely highlight the dramatic and melancholic side of someone's life.

Take Williardi Wizard's wife as an example, she was interviewed to give some facts about her husband's trial and staggering confession. As the interview went on, I realized the interview had been bent to some other direction, which is not related to or relevant  to the main purpose of her presence. The detailed exposition about her feelings and what their children felt about the storm hitting their father indicated that the whole interview was derailed. This just proved how our news programs have turned into a new version of soap operas.

Some people find this very entertaining and that is OK with them to see the melodrama news. Some other, however, do not feel the same. They think TV should emphasize its function on society enlightenment, instead of the overly blatant narrative about someone's feelings even though this someone is in the spotlight.

Nonetheless, what we witness lately is not an enlightening TV but a misleading TV. Did we still recall few months ago when some Indonesian TV stations had proudly yet wrongly reported that Noordin M. Top was already killed and shot but in fact still breathing, sound, and unhurt?

Don Bosco blamed this on the absence of profession standard and ethics of journalists and broadcasting system; whereas, Garin Nugroho mentioned a typical case of misleading TV by pleading the entire society elements to take a critical point of view whenever TV serves its viewers invalid news or improper contents. In the US, the society takes a key role in taking control of the development of broadcasting world. Once American people demanded TV stations and the sponsors to apologize for airing and exploiting lots of violence in their news programs. Back in our homeland, have you ever seen a TV station asked for its viewers apology for having presented untrue news or news that later is found to be completely wrong?

During the show, there were several 'trivial' facts that explained how TV has changed the face of human civilization since its first appearance.
  • There are now two billion TV sets on earth.
  • Ninety four percent of the information people obtain is from TV.
  • Thailand, the Phillippines, Egypt, Turkey, and Indonesia are the top five nations that watch TV more than any other nations on the planet.

Apart from those facts, I am convinced most of us are now aware that some part of our personality is even derived from what we see from TV.TV is merely a tiny box-shaped inanimate thing (or a thin glosy flat board-shaped object, if we refer to the most sophisticated plasma and LCD TV) but never underestimates its potential in shaping humans' psyche.
