Mata Najwa: Coup D'etat? Not Really....

Last night the fourth episode of Mata Najwa was airing on Metro TV. The chosen guests, again,  were marvelous. I assume this episode really succeeded to bring together two groups of politicians or politic practitioners taking part in Indonesian politics. The first was of course the older generation, which was represented in the show by the former MPR (Majelis Permusyawaratan Rakyat) chairman, Amien Rais. Everyone in the republic knows well this political veteran's outstanding reputation. Amien ran for presidential elections in 2004 but failed. He was also marching in the foremost row when the 1998 major reform blasted and took tolls. The second was the younger and fresher generation, represented by a bunch of young yet brilliant politicians calling themselves Kabinet Indonesia Muda (Young Indonesian Cabinet).
This episode of Mata Najwa  highlighted Indonesian commander in chief's paranoia (of being dethroned?). As Indonesian mass media had covered, our dear president Mr. Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has signaled twice that his safety was at risk. The first occurred when he displayed publicly how some prospective terrorists were practicing their shooting skills by aiming the bullets at his photos. The president's fearful statement was said to be supported by a video recording clearly describing the terrorists' preparation in an attempt to assassinate him. The second was his speech prior to Dec 9, the world's anti-corruption day. SBY appeared to be so freaked out. What was actually happening? What made him do that?

The show commenced and there came out several outstanding newbies in domestic political domain. They're not prominent figures with shiny bald heads or grey hair or wrinkled skin face. Though I noticed some of them are starting going bald, they're relatively younger than well, let's say, other senior politicians and statesmen. Being thirty or so of age, 39 years old tops, 27 downs. The eldest of all is Budiman Sujatmiko, who used to be a PRD activist or chairman (?) if I'm not mistaken. This is the organizational list of the 'cabinet' of KIM (Kabinet Indonesia Muda):
  1. Budiman Sujatmiko (President)
  2. Poempida Hidayatullah (Vice President)
  3. Taufik Basari (Politics, Laws, and Security Coordination Minister)
  4. Andi Widjajanto (Defense Minister)
  5. Boni Hargens (ooops, I forgot)
  6. Martin Manurung (National Development and Planning chairperson)
  7. Meutya Hafid (Informatics and Communication Minister)
Together they brainstormed their insights on the current situations from various angles. Although I got a bit puzzled to what point the discussion would lead us, these seven young men had showcased their best use of rhetorics.

After KIM got down from the stage, Amien Rais stepped up into the spotlight. Greeted by Najwa, Amien explained how warm the domestic political situation has become recently. Despite the warmth, the current situation doesn't offer any chance for anybody to impeach the reigning ruler. Amien suggested that the problem be solved in a prudent, honest, and firm manner by the authorities.

Later in the interview, Amien Rais was bombarded by Najwa three times as many about the speculation saying he would like those who got involved in Century Gate (i.e. Boediono and Sri Mulyani) to step down. Amien rebutted the speculation by saying he has got no hidden political agenda/ wicked intention whatsoever to dethrone the current vice president so that he could propose a replacement for Boediono from his party's members (Partai Amanat Nasional). Interrogating in a very wicked  and unforgiving devil's advocate style, Najwa inquired Amien three times and seemed to ensure whether Amien had spilled the truth or not. To me, this part was kind of annoying to watch as I saw Amien's facial expression showing his being tired of the brief 'interrogation'. I wish Najwa could drop this style of interviewing in the next episode. It is emotionally draining to be asked the same questions on the same issue by the same interviewer more than twice. It is like you're accused of being a liar in public.

The last interview session was bringing in a couple of experts. They were Ikrar Nusa Bakti (a LIPI Political Science Professor) and Deni Indrayana (Presidential Legal Staff). Like what Amien Rais had previously stated, Ikrar also concluded that coup d'etat or impeachment or sudden shift of power is unlikely to take place in Indonesia now. Deni Indrayana was there as well to clarify that the president's statement prior to Dec 9, 2009 was actually aimed to encourage Indonesian people to celebrate the anti-corruption day by not ignoring some precautionary measures with the objective of avoiding unexpected chaos or major bedlam especially around the capital.

The show ended after Raditya Dika's "Kambingisme" (Goat-ism) and "Bangsa Kasihan" (Pitiful Nation) recitation by a number of well-known figures such as Prita Mulyasari, Republik Mimpi (or Democrazy?) crew, etc.
